The house is located in front of the statue of Moses, which marks the end of the pedestrian path to 14 chapels. The location is rich in history. In 1909, the arrival of the funicular created an influx of pilgrims that moved from across the country to Sacromonte of Varese. Thus, they decided to move the seat, keeping the same name that already enjoyed a good reputation.
In 1921 the Colonne Hotel Restaurant re-opened in its new location, which was run by the Bianchi family until 1968. They closed its doors in the late ’70s, after it was outsourced to third parties. After nearly twenty years, architect Ettore Mocchetti was entrusted with the task of restoring the house to its former glory. After a five-year restoration, the house re-opened in 1994 to the glowing reviews of clients, the press and city authorities.
The house has been treated in detail and you can still find a large tiled stove from the first half of the nineteenth century, a large fresco, a replica of the eighteenth century, prints and paintings, antique furniture and antique woodwork. Additionally, all rooms have a decor designed to accommodate the customer with the best possible comfort.
The facility’s operations were gradually restored, starting from the cafeteria and the restaurant, with over one hundred seats, and, in the end, a hotel with ten rooms, each one different from the other. A new chapter has begun in the history of the hotel. “Welcome to my home!”, Chef Silvio Battistoni says as he greets his guests.
The rooms are individually decorated each with its own elegant style, in order to offer the guests a different experience of stay. Daily room cleaning and linen, Reception 24h/24h.
Guests can enjoy the breakfast on the terrace, in order to admire the wonderful view.
What Guests Say About Us
Excellent! Albergo Colonne is a great family hotel. I stayed with my parents, my wife, and my three-year-old son for two nights. We had a wonderful time. Everyone made us feel welcome and treated us as if we were members of the family. Silvio and his staff went the extra mile to make our stay more relaxed and just brilliant all round. Eating at the hotel restaurant proved to be a perfect choice for us. The food was outstanding. Every single course was carefully planned and served. It was a really true masterpiece on a plate: such a good harmony and combination of flavors and textures. Most of the ingredients are from local sources and a commitment to the rich tradition of Italian cuisine. Superb!
Quite simply one of the most idylic places I have ever had the good fortune to visit. Beautiful rooms, with the most amazing view I have experienced from a hotel room. Below this, the restaurant serves delicious food - a special choice of two courses (plus pudding) for guests with the option of an impressive seven course tasting menu. The courses are perfectly matched to the amazing backdrop. The wine list is comprehensive, but not intimidating (I'd advise staying local), with some great value sparkling wines which go far beyond the prosecco people initially associate with Italy. The staff at the hotel are friendly, accommodating and do their very best to make the stay a great one. The town of Santa Maria del Monte, on which the hotel is perched, is breathtaking. A world heritage site seeming unknown to many tourists, it comes into its own in the evening when you can watch the sun set over a perfect medieval town. Its easy to get to the nearby town of Varese and around an hour to the busier towns around Lakes Magiore and Lugano. Despite plenty of excellent holidays recently, this is the first time I have ever written a review, and can't recommend this hotel, restaurant, town and region highly enough - you'd be mad to choose anywhere else!
We stayed here in sept 2018, my Husband was in a bike race in Varese. Beautiful setting in the hills the views are totally amazing. The food is of high standard, the rooms are clean and well decorated . The staff are so very welcoming and absolutely nothing was too much trouble. On race morning they got up extra early so the racers at the Hotel all got breakfast. Definitely recommend this Hotel and very much looking forward to a return visit.
“Hotel Colonne” is the only hotel situated on the top of the Sacro Monte di Varese and literally at the foot of the Sanctuary dedicated to the Virgin Mary where ends the Holy Road with its 14 chapels. This excellent position makes the hotel a unique place for the tourists and pilgrims which could have desired to be accommodated maximally close to the Sanctuary and other landmarks in vicinity. The hotel is not a very big structure, but offers the guests one very pleasant combination between domestic coziness and all modern facilities. The rooms are furnished very elegantly in classic style and have a wide balcony, which permit one unforgettable view to the Lake Varese. The lobby of the hotel is amazing place with period furniture and beautiful tile stove where the guests could enjoy to the delightful Italian coffee and of course to the delicious sweets of “Mamma Vanna” and in the same time to be charmed again from the impressive view to the lake and the valley. The restaurant of the hotel is a member of the association JRE (Jeunes Restaurateurs) and offers to the lovers of the gourmet cuisine varied specialties prepared with highly culinary skills as well extremely good Italian wines. All the conditions in the hotel are real guarantee about one pleasant and memorable sojourn. Beside that the guests have the possibility to visit in closeness not only the Sanctuary, which is the fine example of the late Italian baroque but also such interesting places as the Museum Baroffio and the Museum House of Lodovico Pogliaghi. The Estense Palace in Varese with its beautiful garden is also not so far away - it’s located only on 10 km. from the hotel. For the drivers the hotel offers enough wide parking conformable to its capacity.
